Doesn’t your employer offer health insurance? Or if you still live with your parents, can they include you on their policy? Or if you’re a full-time student, does your school offer an insurance plan?
If none of the above applies, check with your state department of health and human services and see if there are any low-cost government programs you qualify for.
The best, cheapest way is through your employer.
The next best way is through a local agent, who can help you balance costs and coverages, and explain how it works.
The worst way, is over the internet - the quote sites actually harvest your information to sell as leads to agents. Or, you’ll be “scammed”, or sold a “plan” which is really a list and won’t ever pay anything.
I would recommend working with an agent to find health insurance coverage. You can also view plans on your own and being to narrow down your options. We provide links at our site where consumers can view health insurance plans online - then speak with an agent.
Goofs….anyway assuming you’re not destitute just because you’re 19 like the first answerer assumes. You just need to find an insurance broker that does business in your state.
Going through your employer is NOT always the best way and you’d think someone that has answered 10,000 questions would know that.
Individual coverage is cheaper and group is only going to be cheaper if the employer is paying for more than half of the coverage.
Find a broker like me and they’ll find you coverage.
Call a local agent. The policies available depend on where you live. An experienced agent can narrow down your options to one that best fits your needs, and that you can afford in just a few minutes. Avoid the online shopping, there is just simply too much information, and too many scams to watch out for.

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable.
My advice is to connect with a local insurance agent near you who knows the plans and companies well.
You can do this by filling out the form at and a local agent will contact you and help you through this. Good luck!
