Health Insurance for a 19 yr old?
MISSseVen asked:
i am a 19 yr old female, in college but not attending full-time. if i was attending full-time, how long would my parents health insurance cover me for? they have bc/bs. also, i was thinking of getting my own health insurance. i live in northern virginia, specifically in the DMV area, which would be the best health insurance for me? i am not a tobacco/alcohol user. i work between 30 and 35 hours a week so my paychecks are pretty good but i have other expenses as well. any advice and help would be greatly appreciated!

Your college may offer a group plan, mine does(And requires one, for that matter, if you’re attending full-time)
can’t you get it through work or through school? it will be more pricey if you get it individually
Your parents need to contact their provider to see if you still qualify to be on their plan. If you don’t you may want to inquire about student health plans through your school. You say you work, does your employer offer health insurance, and do you qualify for it? Employee health coverage is mostly covered by the employer, they pay much more than you do in the event that you need to see a doctor for anything. I have it through my job, I pay about $30 every two weeks for medical, prescription, dental, and vision insurance. If I wanted to get an individual insurance plan I’d be paying twice as much just for basic medical.
it is kinda like travelocity or orbitz but for health care.. just a few basic questions and tell it what kind of coverage you’re looking for and it will search for the best price for your area. but check with the school because most colleges include a fee in your tuition for a campus clinic. It usually doesn’t have a major medical (for emergencies) but generally covers checkups, prescriptions, etc.
MISSseVen, Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I live in Maryland I’m not familiar with the Virginia laws and regulations, so I suggest you call a nearby health insurance agent. They will be able to assist you.
If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable.
If you were attending college full time then most companies will allow you to stay on your parents health insurance plan until at least the age of 23 (and some until the age of 25).
However, if you are fairly healthy then you may find a cheaper option purchasing a health insurance plan on your own (since your are young and healthy it is easy to find an affordable plan). Stick with large and trusted companies like Humana, Blue Cross, United Healthcare, etc. and stay away from medical discount plans.
