Health insurance for 1 person?

Emmers asked:

I am considering getting a job that does not have health insurance benefits, however they are willing to pay a little bit more so I could get my own. I was wondering what is the cheapest (but best for you) health insurance you know of and how much of a pay increase would you ask for to afford the insurance? I’m 5′9, 120 lbs, and healthy with no medical problems. I am also a 23 yr old female. That should be it!

If you’re healthy and 23, it’s going to cost around $250 a month, without maternity benefits.

I just had the same situation and pay $195 per month without maternity. I have a $250 deductible and a $25 doctor’s office copay and have a prescription card.

If you’re healthy and 23, it’s going to cost around $127 a month, WITH maternity benefits.

Which is why we have no idea because it depends on where you live. However, $250/month is outrageous unless you live NY, NJ, or MA…then it’s cheap.

Get a qualified “High Deductible Health Plan” and ask your employer to make non taxable contributions to your Health Savings Account, equal to the maximum allowed per year. ($2,900 in 2008).
